Interview with Silvia Astrain, Head of Innovation, Communications and Projects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Could you tell us about ADACEN and its mission in supporting people with acquired brain injury in Navarre?<\/em><\/p>\n\n

ADACEN is the Acquired Brain Injury Association of Navarre, a non-profit organisation with more than 30 years of experience. Acquired brain injury is a sudden neurological injury that can result in a range of long-term impairments and challenges. Our mission is to improve the quality of life of people living with acquired brain injury, as well as that of their families. We work to promote greater independence, social inclusion and access to comprehensive rehabilitation services. We are also committed to raising public awareness, supporting prevention initiatives and fostering innovation within the health and social care sectors. <\/p>\n\n

How is your Living Lab designed, and what are the key principles that underpin its approach?<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Since 2019, we have operated Neurolab ADACEN, an open innovation space focused on health and social care, where we are able to support the entire innovation process, from idea generation through to testing and validation.The main objective of our Living Lab is to ensure that solutions developed in the field of acquired brain injury address the real needs of users, improve their quality of life, and can be effectively implemented in real-world settings.People with acquired brain injury and ADACEN professionals are involved at every stage of the process, starting with the identification of needs. To identify challenges and opportunities for improvement, we typically hold at least two meetings each year, during which users share their experiences and highlight aspects of daily life that could be improved. <\/p>\n\n

Users bring their direct experience, which allows us to better adapt the solutions we develop, or that are brought to us, to their real needs and abilities. They are very involved because acquired brain injury results in lifelong consequences, so they see anything that can help improve their quality of life as an opportunity.Many of them are delighted to take part because it gives them the opportunity to spend time with other people, to feel that they are being listened to, and to see that their experiences are valued. It is also an empowering experience for them.Professionals, meanwhile, bring the clinical perspective, which is essential to ensure that innovations are truly useful, accessible and effective. <\/p>\n\n

What services does your Living Lab provide?<\/em><\/p>\n\n

First, we offer needs identification with the target group; then co-creation with both users and ADACEN professionals. We also provide testing and validation of prototypes and services, usability and accessibility assessments, and support in human-centred design based on real users\u2019 needs.These services enable companies to reduce risks, improve their solutions, and adapt them to the market in a very practical and targeted way. <\/p>\n\n

Companies are often surprised by what we are able to contribute because, at first glance, they tend to see us as a social organisation whose role is simply to address a social need. However, we have a skilled and experienced team with a strong understanding of project methodologies. We want companies to recognise the expertise, potential and collaborative capacity that we bring to the table. <\/p>\n\n

Your Living Lab is accredited by ENoLL<\/a>. What does membership of this European network represent for ADACEN, and how can it help attract new projects to Navarre? <\/em><\/p>\n\n

This accreditation was very important to us from the outset because it represents recognition of the quality of our work and validates the methodological approach that we believe should guide our activities. It has also opened up opportunities for us to participate in European projects, establish international collaborations, and bring new initiatives to Navarre. <\/p>\n\n

For example, we are currently involved in the IA-Speak project, which has two components. The first is a device that uses artificial intelligence to translate, in real time, the speech of people with speech impairments. It is trained to recognise an individual\u2019s speech patterns and uses their own voice to communicate what they want to say.The second component is a speech and language therapy rehabilitation platform. We are also involved in the strategic project VYSIUM HEALTH<\/a> alongside Navarra Health Cluster. <\/p>\n\n

In recent years, we have been involved in more technology-focused projects, but we also work on more socially oriented initiatives, such as ICTUSnet. This project aims to identify the needs of people who have experienced acquired brain injury, as well as those of their families, particularly in terms of support and care once the hospitalisation phase has ended.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
