About 250 professionals from the biomedical sector and the Navarra society crowded the auditorium of the Pamplona Planetarium to accompany Mariano Barbacid in the presentation in Navarra of ‘El Camino Inverso’<\/a>, the documentary about his scientific career. The wide following of the event, organized by the Navarra Health Cluster and the Hermanos \u00c1lvarez Quir\u00f3s Foundation<\/a>, is a good example of the importance of Barbacid in the recent history of medical research in Spain. However, the biochemist avoided dwelling on the past and focused his speech on the unfinished business of Spanish R&D and the need for more funding to achieve a relevant position at the international level.<\/p>\n\n

In her opening speech, Alicia L\u00f3pez de Oc\u00e1riz, president of the Navarra Health Cluster, claimed that “when talking about science in Spain, the name of Mariano Barbacid becomes indispensable”. For the researcher, Barbacid is a “world reference in cancer research” and his contributions have had a significant impact on the understanding and treatment of this disease”. For this reason, the president of the NHC urged those present that Barbacid’s presence in Navarra should serve to recover the applause that health professionals received during the pandemic, “when we talked so much about the importance of science”.<\/p>\n\n

Next, Isidro Villoria, president of the Hermanos Alvarez Quiros Foundation, was proud to organize an event aimed at the main objective of the institution, “outreach”. “And for this we have the best researcher in pancreatic cancer, who also supports young scientists,” he extolled. In this sense, Villoria highlighted the reference that Barbacid is for young entrepreneurs and scientists. “We should be as proud of them as we are of our soccer players,” he said, and then recommended that artists and journalists get closer to science so that, together, “we can spread it better, because it is universal”. “The documentary has traveled part of the world, Europe and Spain, and let’s hope that it will be the embryo of important achievements”, he concluded.<\/p>\n\n

After thanking the president of the Hermanos \u00c1lvarez Quir\u00f3s Foundation, Barbacid and L\u00f3pez de Oc\u00e1riz held a dialogue in which they reflected on the importance of strengthening the links between basic research and clinical application, vindicated the role of companies in this mission, and stressed the importance of working to ensure that research results reach patients, “who, ultimately, are the ones for whom we work”.<\/p>\n\n

In this sense, Barbacid recommended to the young scientists in the audience to “self-examine, to ask themselves if they really have a strong vocation for science, because the path of the scientific world is not easy and does not bring great economic benefits”. However, he added that, with the right enthusiasm, it is a very rewarding profession.<\/p>\n\n

In the exchange, Barbacid lamented that investment in research and development in Spain “is out of range” and that “much more is needed to be a country with some weight in the world in science and technology”. In this sense, the biochemist criticized that “not investing in science produces relative setbacks with other countries that are difficult to correct”. He also refuted the widespread but erroneous idea that the capacity to invest in research is a consequence of the level of economic development. “It’s not that the rich countries are the ones that invest the most in R&D, but that the countries that have invested the most in research and development are now the richest,” he qualified. In addition, he sent a message to promote research with application capacity. “Scientific research of excellence is that which produces results that create wealth,” he reminded.<\/p>\n\n

After the dialogue, ‘El Camino Inverso’ (The Reverse Path), a documentary produced by the Hermanos \u00c1lvarez Quir\u00f3s Foundation together with Mediapro, was screened for the first time in Navarra, a journey through Barbacid’s career. The film also reflects on the importance of basic research as the origin of knowledge, how cancer works, how research works, new therapies and society’s support for the scientific world.<\/p>\n\n

These ideas were the subject of the round table that followed, which discussed the importance of technology transfer in developing new drugs and therapies that can improve patients’ health. Barbacid himself and L\u00f3pez de Oc\u00e1riz took part in the colloquium, accompanied by Ruth Vera<\/strong>, head of the Medical Oncology Service of the University Hospital of Navarra<\/a> (SNS-O)<\/strong>; Luis Montuenga<\/strong>, senior researcher at the Cancer Center of the Cl\u00ednica Universidad de Navarra<\/a> (CUN)<\/strong> and the Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA)<\/a><\/strong>; Julio Castro<\/strong>, CEO of Palobiofarma<\/a><\/strong>; and Marisa Villafranca<\/strong>, coordinator of Patient and User Services of the Spanish Association Against Cancer<\/a> in Navarra.<\/p>\n\n

The event was closed by Patricia Fanlo, Councilor for University, Innovation and Digital Transformation of the Government of Navarra<\/a>. In his speech, Fanlo reaffirmed the commitment of the Regional Executive to personalized medicine, since “it allows us to know the susceptibility to certain diseases, improve treatments and prevent adverse reactions.” “Navarra continues to make progress in the development of its Personalized Medicine Strategy, an approach that not only improves patient care, but also boosts scientific and technological research,” he added. The Councilor stressed the importance of scientific dissemination to bring research closer to the public. “Events like this not only inform, but also inspire and connect society with scientific advancement,” he stressed. Fanlo thanked Barbacid for his presence and congratulated the Navarra Health Cluster for organizing the conference.<\/p>\n\n

Visit to industry leaders in Navarre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

As an association that facilitates business collaboration with research and clinical practice centers, Navarra Health Cluster promotes innovation and technology transfer so that knowledge benefits patients. Taking advantage of Barbacid’s visit, Navarra Health Cluster organized, prior to the event, a presentation of the health ecosystem in Navarra, a booming sector. First, they visited the CEIN <\/a> business incubator, followed by a meeting with entrepreneurs on the role of startups in the science, technology and innovation system. Afterwards, they went to the Cima to give a talk to pre-doctoral researchers from Navarra’s universities and research centers in which Barbacid encouraged them to keep their passion for science alive: “It is a career that offers great freedom and that, on a personal level, has not caused me a single regret in my 50-year career”.<\/p>\n\n
