Medical Open World is a non-profit organization that develops accessible medical technology to reduce neonatal mortality in low-resource and fragile settings. We were created around a simple but urgent belief: a premature baby’s chances of survival should not depend on where they are born. Based in Pamplona (Spain), we work with an international network of collaborators, hospitals, and NGOs, following a hands-on approach—designing, manufacturing, deploying, and supporting solutions that truly work where infrastructure is limited.
Our flagship project is IncuNest, an open-source, low-cost neonatal incubator designed to deliver essential care where conventional incubators are financially out of reach. With an approximate material cost of €350, IncuNest combines thermoregulation, phototherapy, and remote monitoring, aiming to provide thermal stability and practical clinical safety through a robust, portable, and energy-efficient design. In many hospitals, continuous Kangaroo Mother Care is not always feasible due to staffing constraints, distance, shift dynamics, or family realities. IncuNest fills that critical gap by keeping the newborn warm and stable when the mother cannot be present.
Sustainable impact is built into the way we operate. We manufacture in Spain with the support of solidarity workshops and vocational training centers, and we collaborate with logistics partners and local organizations so that delivery is followed by real installation and training—not just shipment. In parallel, we publish documentation so other teams can replicate, adapt, and improve the technology, accelerating collective learning and scaling impact beyond our own capacity.
